The aim of this course is to provide professionals who are new to water risk with a clear and practical introduction to the fundamentals of water risk. It explores why water risk matters, the different types of water risk and their potential impacts on businesses, investments and development outcomes. Learners are introduced to physical, infrastructure and governance risks, commonly used open-source tools, and a holistic water risk assessment blueprint.

The course is suitable for professionals with little or no previous experience in water risk, including sustainability and ESG professionals, consultants, corporate teams, financial and investment professionals, academics and development practitioners.

By the end of the course, learners will have a solid understanding of the water risk landscape, the business case for action, and key principles and do’s and don’ts of assessing water risks. The course provides the essential “why” and “what” of water risk, but does not teach learners how to independently conduct a comprehensive water risk assessment. Professionals seeking this practical assessment capability are recommended to progress to a Water Risk Assessment Certification.

How you will be assessed

There are no formal exams. Upon completion, learners receive a Certificate of Completion.

Course Content

The course is a self-paced introductory programme consisting of six recorded training modules of approximately 45 minutes each

Understanding the multi-dimensionality of water risks:
This unit introduces the fundamentals of water risk and explains why water risk is more complex than water scarcity alone. Learners explore the different dimensions of water risk and why taking a holistic perspective is important for understanding the challenges facing businesses, governments and society.

Understanding the business case for water security:
This unit explores why water risk matters to organisations and how water-related challenges can translate into business and financial impacts. Learners develop an understanding of the business case for identifying, managing and addressing water risks.

Understanding how to rapidly scan for water risks: This unit introduces learners to commonly used open-source water risk tools and demonstrates how these can provide high-level insights into potential water risks. Learners gain an understanding of what these tools can—and cannot—tell them and why tool-based screening should not be confused with a comprehensive water risk assessment.

Understanding physical water risks:
This unit introduces the key dimensions of physical water risk, including water stress, water pollution and water-related disasters. Learners develop an understanding of the types of information that need to be considered when evaluating physical water risks, without being trained to conduct a full physical risk assessment themselves.

Understanding infrastructure and governance risks:
This unit expands the perspective beyond physical water conditions and introduces the role of water infrastructure and governance in driving water risk. Learners explore why these dimensions are critical to understanding the underlying causes of water-related challenges and why they need to be considered alongside physical risks.

Understanding and communicating water risk information:
This unit brings the different dimensions of water risk together and helps learners understand how water risk information can be interpreted and communicated to different stakeholders. It provides a foundation for engaging with water risk assessments and communicating why action may be required, rather than training learners to independently conduct or implement a comprehensive assessment.
